An Enduring Reputation for Integrity and Professionalism
For 75 years, Standard Builders has been committed to excellence in providing professional construction services to some of the most prestigious, discerning business owners throughout New England.
In the late 1940s, construction activity across the United States ramped up in response to accelerated growth in nearly every market sector during the post-World War II boom. Standard Builders was started by Charlie Munigle Sr. in 1949, amidst those thriving economic conditions.
Subsequent leaders, Chuck Munigle Jr followed by Bob Kiely, built Standard Builder’s reputation as a quality contractor that operated primarily in the industrial/commercial market sectors in a small radius around the city of Hartford CT. Major projects completed included The Hartford Courant Expansion, the RPI Building and Scoville Headquarters.
The major recession of the early 90’s had significant impact to the Defense, Banking and Insurance industries which were the cornerstone of Standard Builders. Bob Sullivan joined the company in late 1987 and in 1994 was promoted to President to lead the company. Standard Builders’ markets shifted to primarily Healthcare and Institutional while maintaining it’s presence in the commercial market. Additionally, they began to become recognized as an industry leader in the use of technology for all projects delivered. Under Bob’s leadership, Standard Builders continued to expand it’s geographic territory to now service all of Connecticut and central and western Mass. Annual volume grew from $5M annually to approximately $60M. Major projects completed included the Foxwoods Tanger Outlets, UConn’s Hilltop Dorm renovation and Baystate Health 3601 Expansion.
In 2017, Bob and the current leadership of SBI began planning in earnest for their transition out, and preparing the organization to be successful in the future. This process ultimately culminated in 2023, when Josh Sullivan took over as the 5th President of Standard Builders, capping a carefully planned, 7-year-long leadership transition that will springboard SBI into the next chapter of its growth and leadership in the New England construction market.
Josh Sullivan began working for Standard Builders as a Union laborer in 2007 while earning a bachelors in Resource Economics and Business and a masters in Construction Management.
In 2019 Josh championed a strategic plan that brought together the existing transitioning leadership and the future leadership, and profoundly influenced the direction of the company.
When implemented, the plan generated opportunities for geographic and market segment growth, spread responsibility for client relationship management throughout the organization, and provided more resources for the training and development of all SBI employees. This resulted in steady growth from 2019 – 2024 and expanded SBI’s footprint to service all of New England with offices in Wethersfield CT and Waltham MA.
With its solid foundation and prestigious industry reputation, and through Josh’s vision for the future, SBI is poised to continue to grow aggressively, while maintaining SBI’s client-first brand, the cornerstone for success over the last 75 years
